This is a State forest, not the national park

Olney State Forest is a Forestry Corporation of NSW working forest in the Watagan Mountains, west of Lake Macquarie on the Central Coast hinterland. It is not Watagans National Park. The park, and the neighbouring Heaton and Watagan State Forests, sit on the same hills and share the name people type; they are different managers and different pages. Olney is the forest most visitors meet at The Pines — remnant slash pines from 1920s–30s trial plantings, a free picnic ground, free first-come camping, and the official Abbotts Falls and Dora Creek walks. Dogs are welcome under effective control. Entry and camping are free. Nothing here is a booking. Roads are forest roads — after rain they can be slippery or closed. This site is an unofficial operator’s manual in the State Forest Guide Australia network. Check Forestry Corporation before you drive.

What kind of forest day?

Best for

Free first-come named camp; dog under effective control; The Pines picnic plus a short official creek or falls walk; willingness to run Friday Plan B.

Skip if

You need a reserved pad tonight; you wanted Boarding House Dam / Monkey Face / Gap Creek Falls / a booked NPWS camp; you refuse unsealed roads after rain; you wanted a big tourist waterfall; you need a cabin or powered site inside the forest.

The Pines

Picnic area, camping area, and the Dora Creek walk — one precinct. Free. First-come. The pines are 1920s–30s trial plantings, not old-growth wilderness.

FAQ

Is Olney State Forest a national park?

No. It is a Forestry Corporation of NSW working forest in the Watagan Mountains. Watagans National Park is a different manager on the same hills. Dogs, camping and bookings follow different rules.

Is camping free? Can I reserve a site at The Pines?

Camping is free and first-come. Sites cannot be pre-booked. The covered picnic shelter can be hired via Forestry Corp’s visit@fcnsw.com.au — that is not a camp booking.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes, under effective control in the State forest. Not in the adjoining national park. Check 1080 signs.

How long do I need?

Times below are ours. Forestry Corp doesn’t publish walk hours. Half day at The Pines picnic + Pines walking track; full day add Abbotts Falls; overnight at a named first-come camp with a Friday Plan B.

Is this site official?

No. Independent unofficial operator’s manual in the State Forest Guide Australia network. Not Forestry Corporation. Not NPWS.

Rules and site names come from Forestry Corporation of NSW’s Olney page and their statewide camping, dogs and fires pages. Closures: official notices map. Fires: RFS plus Forestry Corp solid-fuel notices. NSW Government listing used only for extra Pines picnic wording.

Not independently walked. Conditions, roads and fire rules change. Verify with Forestry Corporation of NSW.
